The Nomisma vocabulary

The Nomisma Cookbook – using the nomisma.org vocabulary.

The Nomisma Vocabulary refers to the controlled set of defined terms and relationships used by the Nomisma.org project to describe numismatic objects and other numismatic concepts in a consistent, machine-readable way. It’s part of a Linked Open Data (LOD) approach for numismatics — essentially a structured vocabulary and ontology that lets scholars and systems refer to concepts (like coin denominations, mints, regions, hoards, etc.) using stable identifiers (URIs) and formal definitions.

This means the vocabulary represents a set of norm data (it provides standardized identifiers – URIs and these serve as authoritative references). On top it provides:

  • structured properties (e.g., coordinates for mints, dates for rulers)
  • formal semantic meaning using RDF/OWL ontologies like https://nomisma.org/ontology
  • relationships between concepts (e.g., a mint belongs to a region; a denomination is part of a monetary system)
